Duc, happy to be here! Here is KY 622 in the northeast corner of Simpson County on the way to Gold City. One hundred and twenty miles down, a mere 20 to go. We were riding the Son of WACKY, a one-day, 140-mile cross-Kentucky ride from Otter Creek Park to Franklin, Ky. The ride follows a modified version of the original WACKY route which we have used to ride across the state for six years until 2001, when the start was moved from the Louisville riverfront to Otter Creek Park in Meade County to avoid problems with traffic in Jefferson and Bullitt counties. Duc, seven-year-old “Whistling” Lucas and nine-year-old “Cool Customer” Nicholas on our train of a tandem and a trailercycle, on the way to Bardstown on the 24th Old Kentucky Home Tour. It was the best way to tour the scenic backroads of Kentucky on a late summer day. (Mom was a bit behind, as the boys’ initial enthusiasm powered us to a sizable lead six miles into the ride.) Mile 143 (of a 170-mile ride). Duc climbing up to Old Drake on KY 622 near the Warren-Simpson county line on the solitary 1999 WACKY, a one-day cross-state ride from Louisville to Franklin, Ky. The Tennessee state line — and the end of the ride — is only 20-something miles away. For one reason or another, rider after rider bailed out on the chance of going “wacky.” The coup de grâce was the weather forecast: hot and humid (95°F) and a whole day of headwind. So the 1999 WACKY saw one lone rider head south to Franklin. July 1999. (Photo by Michael Lowe)
